The term “hymen” is most often used by teenage girls for whom virginity is a current topic. However, there are some women for whom this tissue, or rather its preservation, has much greater significance. Thus, today there is an option to undergo hymen reconstruction. Read on to find out what this procedure involves and what the main reasons are for women who choose to undergo it.
What is the Hymen?
The hymen is a thin membrane of tissue that is part of the vulva and is located 1–2 centimeters behind the vaginal opening, which it covers.
Structure of the Hymen
The hymen consists of various types of tissue, including mucous membrane and connective tissue. Every woman’s hymen has a different shape, size, and thickness. It is usually elastic, which allows it to stretch during sexual or other physical activities, such as sports.
The hymen develops during embryonic development, meaning that newborn girls are born with this tissue. However, during a woman’s life, the shape, color, size, and elasticity of the hymen change with age and hormone levels.
The Hymen and Menstruation
Since the hymen is located just behind the vaginal entrance, you might wonder how menstruation works. Nature has everything perfectly designed, and the hymen has small openings or one round opening (depending on the specific shape of the hymen) that allows menstrual blood to flow out of the body.
The Significance of the Hymen
As we mentioned earlier, an intact hymen holds more significance in many cultures than just the physiological one. But first, let’s look at the physiological significance.
Physiological Significance
The physiological purpose of the hymen is a speculative topic, as this tissue doesn’t have a crucial biological function. However, the hymen does contribute to women’s health in certain ways. How?
- Protection: The hymen creates a natural barrier that protects the female body from microorganisms, dirt, and potential infections.
- Maintaining Moisture: The hymen helps maintain moisture inside the vagina, which could ensure greater comfort during intercourse.
It is important to emphasize that none of these theories are scientifically confirmed – therefore, it has not been proven that the hymen is necessary for women’s health or reproductive abilities.
Cultural and Symbolic Significance of the Hymen
In some cultures, an intact hymen is still a symbol of virginity and purity. An intact hymen is considered proof that a woman has not been sexually active. These cultures, which see the preservation of the hymen as a sign of virtue, include some Arab, South Asian, and African countries.
Interesting Fact: Even today, in some Muslim cultures, traditional ceremonies are held to confirm a woman’s virginity before marriage. These events involve a medical examination of the intact hymen, often assisted by the future bride’s mother. Confirmation of virginity is considered an important step before marriage.
Over time, however, the cultural and symbolic significance of the hymen has been de-emphasized. Doctors and modern society stress that the hymen is not a reliable indicator of virginity. Damage or rupture of the hymen can occur during other activities besides sex, such as sports or even during natural body growth and development. Therefore, often during the first sexual intercourse, the hymen may not tear, and there may be no bleeding, which is considered proof of virginity.
Hymen Reconstruction
Hymen reconstruction, also known as hymenoplasty, is now a common gynecological surgical procedure performed to restore or create the appearance of an intact hymen.
How is Hymen Reconstruction Performed?
Before the procedure, a consultation with the doctor performing the reconstruction takes place. In addition to an internal pre-operative examination and gynecological check-up, the doctor will discuss with the woman her reasons for undergoing the procedure and her expectations.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and lasts about 45–60 minutes. There are two techniques that can be used during hymen reconstruction:
- Reconstruction of Existing Tissue: In this case, the doctor sutures the existing tissue in the hymen area. This technique is usually preferred because it minimizes risks associated with foreign objects inside the woman’s body.
- Use of Biological Material: Another option is using biological material, such as tissue from another part of the body or artificial implants, to reconstruct the removed hymen.
The hymen is usually stitched with absorbable sutures, so there is no need for later removal. Recovery after the procedure is not long, and if no complications arise, follow-up visits are usually not required. A week after the procedure, it’s recommended to avoid physically strenuous activities and pay attention to increased hygiene to avoid infection at the suture site. Full recovery takes about four weeks, after which you can return to your usual routine and sexual life.
Hymen reconstruction can usually be combined with other vaginal procedures, such as labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, or vaginal rejuvenation.
Why Do Women Undergo Hymen Reconstruction?
There are various reasons why women decide to undergo hymen reconstruction:
- Cultural and Religious Expectations: Women may feel social pressure, whether from family or the broader community, to meet cultural norms by preserving virginity.
- Recovery After Injury: A reason for undergoing hymen reconstruction could also be a physical injury that caused damage or rupture of the hymen.
- Psychological Reasons: In some cases, hymen reconstruction may be done to address psychological trauma. If the hymen was removed in a traumatic way – for example, due to sexual abuse – hymen reconstruction may provide a way to cope with this experience.
- Personal Reasons: Some women may undergo hymen reconstruction for their own preferences or personal reasons. It might be a way to express their sexual autonomy or feel better in their own body.
Tip: Vaginal rejuvenation, which can boost your self-confidence and enhance your sexual experience, may also help you feel more confident in your body.
Before making a final decision, it’s recommended to consult an experienced surgeon and schedule a consultation to thoroughly consider all the consequences and risks associated with hymenoplasty and make an informed decision.
