Reconstruction of the hymen (Hymenoplasty)
Reconstruction of the hymen is performed for religious, cultural or personal reasons of the woman. In some cultures, a hymenal rupture may be a barrier to entry into marriage; at other times, the psychological side of things may play a role, such as when the hymen has been injured in an accident or sexual abuse. Hymenoplasty is now a common gynaecological surgical procedure.

Who is the surgery suitable for?
Hymenoplasty can be recommended for adult women who perceive a hymenal breach as a handicap that makes their personal or social life difficult. In particular, if the hymen has been breached in an unwanted way, for example through abuse or trauma, the woman may perceive the condition as traumatic. Hymenoplasty is also undertaken by women who have entered into a new relationship for symbolic reasons.

How does the procedure go?
Before surgery
During a personal consultation, the doctor will discreetly and sensitively discuss the problem and the woman’s idea. Subsequently, a gynaecological examination is carried out. Prior to the procedure, an internal pre-operative examination will need to be carried out and the doctor should also be informed about the medications being taken and any medical conditions.
The course of the operation
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. During the procedure, the doctor sutures the lining of the vaginal opening, or any remnants of damaged hymen that may remain in the vaginal opening. The wound is sutured with absorbable sutures, so there is no need to remove them. The entire procedure takes approximately 40-60 minutes.
The surgery can be combined with all vaginal procedures, such as labioplasty or vaginoplasty.
After the operation
Hospitalization usually lasts 1 day and the postoperative regimen is not demanding. More frequent showering is recommended to avoid wound infection. Physical exertion is not recommended for a week and sexual intercourse is appropriate after complete healing, approximately 4 weeks.
Important information
The hymen is a part of the vaginal mucosa that covers the vaginal entrance. It varies in thickness and shape. It ruptures after the first sexual intercourse. The procedure is performed from the age of 18.
